Hungarian in charge of Saints Champions League Showdown
Hungarian referee Istvan Vad will be in charge TNS's crucial Champions League showdown with Bohemians at Park Hall next Tuesday. The match is finely balanced with the Principality Welsh Premier League Champions needing to overturn a 1-0 deficit against the Irish Champions.
The young Hungarian referee, who is 31, first appeared on the international stage in 2007 with a qualifier for the Champions League and a second match in the UEFA cup. He is currently a UEFA category 2 referee, which is the same as Wales' highest ranked UEFA official Lee Evans.
In Hungary, he is refereed to as Istvan Vad II, because his father with the same name was an international referee (as well as his grandfather, who's name was also Istvan Vad).
He comes from a real refereeing family as his sister, Anita, is also a referee. He will be assisted by compatriots Gyorgy Ring and Zsolt Attila Szpisjak and their colleague Ferenc Bede will be the 4th official.
The UEFA Referee's Observer for the game is former Swedish FIFA Referee Bo Karlsson who is mostly known for refereeing at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA. He also refereed the 1991 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup Final between Manchester United and Barcelona and he also took charge of the Netherlands' 1-0 win over Scotland in Euro 92.
