Llanelli beat Motherwell and Saints lose, but still have all to play for
Motherwell 0-1 Llanelli AFC
Principality Welsh Premier League side Llanelli recorded one of the best ever Welsh results in Europe with a 1-0 away win over Scottish Premier League side Motherwell in Airdrie on Thursday evening.
A deep Andy Legg corner found defender Stuart Jones unmarked at the far post and he headed home with 29 minutes played for a vital away goal for Llanelli. The goal was against the run of play, but the visitors took their chance excellently in a sundrenched Excelsior Stadium.
The hosts had enjoyed the upper hand in the opening 15 minutes and had a great chance to take the lead when right-back Steven Saunders was unmarked at the far-post from a deep corner, but he shot well over the bar inside ten minutes. The Reds were dealt a blow five minutes later when debutant Lee Jarman fell awkwardly in a challenge and he left the field with a knee injury, to be replaced by Wyn Thomas.
Motherwell continued to dominate after the break and a clever Steven McGarry flicked header flew across the face of Ashley Morris' goal, but 'Well striker John Sutton was just inches from the vital connection.
With 90 minutes on the clock, Motherwell sub Paul Slane shot from distance, but was denied by an outstanding Ashley Morris save to his left, when the venomous effort looked like breaking Reds' hearts.
Manager Andy Legg made changes in the second half and took himself off, with Owain Warlow making his debut on the left-flank and with 65 minutes on the clock, Jordan Follows replaced Craig Jones.
Llanelli's Stuart Jones, Rhys Griffiths and Michael Howard have all been yellow carded by Finnish referee Tero Nieminen for poor challenges in a heated game.
Fram Reykjavik 2-1 The New Saints FC
Fram came from behind to win the match in the Icelandic capital, but the Welsh outfit have everything to play for with an away goal to take back to Park Hall in a weeks time.
TNS took the lead in Iceland with a goal from Wales International Steve Evans on 24 minutes. It was a great start for Andy Cale's side with a precious away goal, but the hosts equalised shortly after from the penalty spot on 33 minutes through ex-Chelsea youngster Sam Tillen. The Icelandic side then took the lead on 49 minutes through Heidar Juliusson.
