Llanelli are in Glasgow and are hoping to stun a depleted Motherwell in the Europa League 1st Qualifying Round this evening. The Reds trained at the Excelsior Stadium yesterday on what is a very big pitch, in a very good Aidrie stadium, and they have been boosted by the omission of a key player in the Motherwell ranks.
The Steelmen have left Paul Quinn out of their squad as the highly-rated right-back could sign for Cardiff City or Hearts in the next few days, which leaves new manager Jim Gannon with just 11 experienced first-team players. Gannon's first signing of Tranmere midfielder Steve Jennings came too late for him to take part in the game.
Goalkeeper Michael Fraser is poised to make his debut after his summer move from Inverness Caledonian Thistle, whilst youngsters Steven Saunders and Jonathan Page are vying for Quinn's right-back role.
Motherwell have also lost Graeme Smith, Artur Krysiak, Brian McLean, Maros Klimpl, Stephen Hughes, Bob Malcolm, David Clarkson and Cillian Sheridan from the squad that finished last season.
'Well qualified for the competition, despite finishing ninth in the SPL, thanks to their Fair Play record with Scotland finishing third in the UEFA Fair Play rankings, and a Llanelli omen could be that the only time that the Reds have progressed in Europe, was against Swedish outfit Gefle IF - who also qualified through the Fair Play Rankings that season.
The Reds were Principality Welsh Premier League runners-up last season, seven points adrift of Rhyl, who defeated Motherwell 3-1 in a pre-season friendly on Saturday. That result for the Lilywhites will give Llanelli confidence of an upset despite being quoted as 21/2 with Motherwell's preferred betting partner, with 5/1 the draw.
