Llanelli get dream UEFA draw
In the inaugarel UEFA Europa League Draw held in Nyon on Monday, Principality Building Society Welsh Premier League Runners up, Llanelli were handed a dream draw against Scottish Premier League side Motherwell.
The Reds will travel to Airdrie's Excelsior Stadium for the first leg on 2nd July, before entertaining their rivals from North of the Border the following week. Scottish oposition should prove to be attractive to football supporters in West Wales and Andy Legg's side should be cheered on by a large crowd.
It will certainly be interesting to see how a Welsh Premier side performs against a club that finished seventh in the highest tier of Scottish football last season, but found themselves in the draw as a result of being awarded a Fair Play place. This will be their second successive season in European competition, having been eliminated from thre 2008/2009 UEFA Cup at the first stage by French side, Nancy. Motherwell looked to have a chance after only losing the away leg by the only goal of the game, but lost 2-0 at home, to go out 3-0 on aggregate. They're sure to view this as a sound chance of progressing in the Competition, but Llanelli will be fired up to cause an upset.
Regular European competitors, The New Saints seem to have been presented with a reasonable chance of progressing into the Second Qualifying Round against Fram from Reykjavik. The Saints will be at home in the first leg, before travelling to Iceland a week later.
Bangor City, who as National Cup Winners were exempt from the First Qualifying Round, drew Finnish side, FC Honka in the draw for the Second Qualifying Round. Honka are currently in 7th Place in the Finnish League, with 14 points from 10 games, having finished runners up behind FC Inter in the 2008 Championship. The club is reknowned for its youth policy, having over 1000 young players registered.
