Steelmen Sign Two More from Old Gold

PORT Talbot Town have further strengthened their squad for the new season with the signing of goalkeeper Steve Cann and the versatile Corey Thomas, both of whom have signed from Carmarthen Town.

Cann, a South African-born stopper, represented Wales at under-19 level and started his career with Derby County.

He then moved to Rotherham United where he made two Football League appearances and starred in a Football League Trophy northern area semi-final penalty shoot-out win over Darlington.

The 26-year-old signed for Aberystwyth in August 2009 and was capped by the Wales Under-23 semi-pro side against Poland the following month.

After three seasons at Park Avenue, in which he made nearly 100 appearances, Cann joined Carmarthen Town in June 2012.

“It came as a bit of a shock to learn he was available to be honest,” said head coach Jarred Harvey.

“He is a hugely experienced player, a great presence and someone who has proven to be one of the best goalkeepers in the Welsh Premier League over the last few seasons.

“The minute we knew he was available we moved for him before news got out, and within ten minutes of speaking to him he wanted to sign. It was great to talk to a player so determined and enthusiastic about playing for Port Talbot.

Strong competition is healthy for any side and it’s something we want to create all over the pitch

“I want to make it clear that we now have two outstanding keepers. Both Steve Cann and Steven Hall have been told that the goalkeeping position is up for grabs. Strong competition is healthy for any side and it’s something we want to create all over the pitch.”

Meanwhile, Carmarthen Town announced that their directors have agreed to release midfielder Corey Thomas from his contract with the club in order to allow him to join Port Talbot Town. "The club wish to thank Corey for his services and wish him well for the future."

Thomas added that he “Really thanks everyone at the club for a fantastic four years. I have to go due to work commitments but would love to be back in the future.”
