Tom Goodwin’s third goal in three games was enough for Newtown to get the points in Bernie McNally’s penultimate game in charge.

Goodwin scored late on after Ian Shredian cancelled out Craig Williams’ penalty to give the Robins the spoils.

It was Bala with the early possession but Newtown threatened first but his shot was deflected wide. Tom Goodwin had a half chance with a volley but chances were limited in the opening exchanges.

Stephen Brown had Bala’s first chance with a header that was well saved by John Rushton and this was followed by half chances from Stuart Jones and Ian Shredian, but both sides were struggling to get a foothold.

But on 27 minutes Matt Hearsey cut in from the left earning a spot kick, which Craig Williams dispatched to keep his rich scoring form going.

Keiran Mills-Evans then preserved the lead with a goal line clearance after Rushton had dropped the ball for Brown.

And this was followed just before the half by a sweeping move for the Robins. Andy Jones fed Hearsey, who worked well with Luke Boundford to lay on Goodwin, but he fired his shot well wide.

Bala had the first chance of the second half as Sheridan scuffed a shot in the six yard box with the goal gaping.

Matt Hearsey cut in from the left soon after but his shot was blocked. But then an error from Shane Sutton allowed Sheridan to run free and slot the ball under Rushton.

Edmunds and Jones had half chances for Newtown before Sheridan missed a free header to put his side into the lead.

But on 80 minutes, Mills-Evans and Williams combined with the latter squaring the ball for Goodwin who grabbed his third goal in three games.

Jeff White and Edmunds had chances before Bala missed a free header in injury time, leaving the score at 2-1 and a much deserved win for the Robins.
