Youthful Aber Crash out of Word Cup

A youthful Aberystwyth Town side succumbed this evening to a last minute penalty, as Welsh League side Cambrian & Clydach progressed to the Word Cup second round by the odd goal in five.

The Black and Greens’ starting line up was bolstered by youth players Samba N’Dong, Jamie Butler and Ed Powl-Jones, and Irish left back Aaron Lemon, who was starting his first game for Town. The game started in a rather scrappy manner, with Powl-Jones shooting high and wide for Aber, and Jason Bertorelli threatening down the left flank for the visitors. Tom Shaw’s free kick drew a great save from Jarod Howells in the Cambrian goal, while at the other end Mike Lewis did well to twice deny Bertorelli. Lemon delivered an excellent cross for Stuart Fraser, who would almost certainly have scored had the offside flag not appeared at the wrong moment. Then three minutes before the break Bertorelli’s corner kick flew straight in to give Cambrian the lead.

Aber showed a great response after the break, and on 51 minutes Fraser glanced home Shaw’s free kick to equalise. Geoff Kellaway was now threatening the visitors defence and eleven minutes later his cross from the right was flicked home by Samba N’Dong’s exquisite back heel, for a goal covered with class. A rash of substitutions followed, with Cledan Davies, Jamie Owen and Daniel Thomas all making an appearance, then on 69 minutes Josh Ryalls equalised for the visitors with a close range finish from a right wing cross, and the game seemed destined for extra time. However once Krystzof Nalborski was taken off with a head injury Aber were down to ten men, and when Bertorelli was felled in the area in the first minute of injury time, he got up to convert the winner from the penalty spot. Incidentally Nalborski was taken to hospital with concussion after the game and all at Aberystwyth Town wish him a speedy recovery.
