No Better Time to Face Champs Says Young

Port Talbot yn Hyderus

Port Talbot Town begin their start of the season double-header away to The New Saints on Saturday (3.45) and Director of Football Scott Young has urged his side to rise to the challenge of facing last season’s champions.

The New Saints won last year’s title at a canter as Port Talbot missed out on European football in a nail-biting play-off final.

The Steelmen have added to their squad over the summer with a handful of signings, including striker Rhys Griffiths and experienced defender Gethin Jones.

And Young believes his side can travel to Oswestry without fear.

“Visiting the league champions on the opening day is tough but there are two ways of looking at it. You can either worry about playing the champions and the fact they’re a full-time side, or you can want the challenge of testing yourself against the best and kick on, and that’s what I want to do. We have to play them at some stage so there’s no better time to do it,” he said.

Port Talbot Town are once again likely to be in contention for a European spot and Young has been pleased with how their pre-season campaign has gone.

“We’ve had a good chat with the players in training this week and I’m think that our pre-season has gone quite well and overall I’m pleased with what we’ve done.”

“We’ve worked the squad hard and I’ve pleased that they’ve been highly responsive to what we’ve been asking them to do.”

Port Talbot begin the new campaign with two games in 48 hours as they travel to TNS on Saturday before hosting Gap Connah’s Quay at the GenQuip Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday.

Midfielder Carl Payne (ankle) and forward Adam Wright (ankle) are expected to miss out on both fixtures, along with Chad Bond who is recovering from surgery.
