Saints lead but beaten by Polish Giants

The New Saints did the Corbett Sports WPL proud but having been ahead at the break, ultimately lost 3-1 against Polish giants Legia Warszawa at the Glynd?r University Racecourse in Wrexham on Wednesday night.

The visitors began brightly and controlled possession in the opening 10 minutes but it was the Welsh Champions who took the lead a minute later. Ryan Fraughan took a short corner to Jamie Mullan and when the ball was returned to Fraughan he whipped the shot past Slovakian international goalkeeper Kuciak from a very tight angle.

Legia’s starting line-up consisted of 7 international players and the Polish fans far outnumbered the TNS faithful. After falling behind they still enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but after 21 minutes it was Chris Seargeant who came closest to scoring the second goal of the evening as his free kick flew inches past Kuciak’s far post.

The New Saints caused their opponents numerous problems on the break and Alex Darlington beat two men before his shot rattled the foot of the Legia post with 4 minutes remaining of the opening period. Unfortunately, TNS would rue that missed opportunity.

Jan Urban brought Polish international Michal Kucharczyk on for the second half and within less than 2 minutes he’d claimed a vital away goal for his side as he beat Harrison confidently from 10 yards.
10 minutes later – the visitors went ahead as Marek Saganowski neatly placed his header into Harrison’s net – a class finish from the 35 times capped Polish international.
The New Saints came close to equalising after 72 minutes but Michael Wilde failed to find the net by a matter of inches.

Once again the footballing gods dealt a savage blow and a cruel lesson to the Welsh Champions as the visitors extended their lead a matter of 2 minutes later. Jakub Kosecki unleashed an unstoppable shot from 20 yards to secure the victory for his side.

A disappointing result for the Champions of the Corbett Sports Welsh Premier League – but a brave and disciplined effort by The New Saints against the best team in the Polish League.

Cafwyd perfformiad clodwiw gan Y Seintiau Newydd ond er iddyn nhw fod ar y blaen ar yr egwyl – colli o 3-1 oedd eu hanes yn y pendraw yn erbyn Legia Warszawa yn Wrecsam nos Fercher.
Er i’r Pwyliaid reoli’r meddiant yn ystod y 10 munud cyntaf – Y Seintiau aeth ar y blaen wedi 11 munud o chwarae. Cymrodd Ryan Fraughan gornel fer gyda Jamie Mullan ac fe chwipiodd Fraughan ei ergyd heibio Kuciak, golwr rhyngwladol Slofacia, i’r gôl.

‘Roedd 7 o chwaraewyr rhyngwladol yn dechrau’r gêm i Legia ac ‘roedd llawer mwy o gefnogwyr gan y Pwyliaiad na ffyddloniaid Y Seintiau. Er i bencampwyr Gwlad P?yl barhau i fwynhau mwyafrif y meddiant, Chris Seargeant ddaeth agosaf at hawlio ail sgôr y noson wrth i’w gic rydd rymus wedi 21 munud hedfan fodfeddi’n unig heibio i bostyn pellaf Kuciak.
Cafodd y golwr ddihangfa arall gyda 4 munud o’r hanner cyntaf ar ôl wrth i ergyd Alex Darlington daro’r postyn.

Daeth chwaraewr rhyngwladol arall i’r maes ar gyfer yr ail hanner ac wedi llai na 2 funud ‘roedd Michal Kucharczyk wedi hawlio gôl oddi-cartref pwysig i’w dîm wrth iddo guro Paul Harrison yn hyderus o 10 llath.

10 munud wedi hynny rhwydodd Legia eu hail gôl o’r noson wrth i Marek Saganowski gyfeirio’i beniad heibio Harrison. Eiliad allweddol gan y g?r sydd wedi ennill 35 o gapiau dros ei wlad.
Wedi 72 o funudau daeth Mike Wilde o fewn trwch blewyn i ddod ?’r Seintiau’n gyfartal ac unwaith yn rhagor cosbwyd y Cymry am beidio manteisio ar eu cyfleoedd.
2 funud yn ddiweddarach tarodd Jakub Kosecki daran o ergyd o 20 llath heibio Harrison i sicrhau’r fuddugoliaeth i Legia Warszawa. Gôl greulon ond gwych gan y g?r sydd eisoes wedi ennill 5 o gapiau dros Wlad P?yl.

Canlyniad siomedig felly i Bencampwyr Uwch Gynghrair Cymru – Corbett Sports ond perfformaid dewr a balch gan Y Seintiau Newydd yn erbyn prif glwb y Pwyliaid.
