Prestatyn Town failed to emulate Bala’s Europa League success as they were beaten 2-1 by Latvian outfit SK Liepãjas Metalurgs on their European debut at Rhyl FC on Thursday night.

The Seasiders’ management team of Lee Jones and Neil Gibson made a bold selection before kick off by handing the gloves to Dave Roberts at the expense of Jon Hill-Dunt for his competitive debut for the club.

The 6th placed Latvian outfit started confidently and controlled possession and after 16 minutes play Jurgis Kalns netted for the visitors which silenced the crowd of 1500.

Prestatyn reacted well to the goal and started gaining more possession and creating more chances. Lee Hunt claimed to have been fouled in the box and Neil Gibson shot inches over the bar which gave the home fans hope.

Their hope was rewarded in first half injury time as Hunt caused problems in the Metalurgs box and Andy Parkinson pounced from 10 yards to claim the historic equaliser – Prestatyn Town’s first ever European goal.

Preststyn’s hopes were given a further boost ten minutes into the second period as Roberts Savalnieks was dismissed for a second bookable offence.
Even though Metalurgs were a man down they showed great heart and scored a valuable second away goal as Šad?ins placed his shot perfectly from outside of the box into Roberts’ top corner after 62 minutes.

Prestatyn pressed for the second equaliser but failed to score a second goal. A valiant effort by the Seasiders – but it leaves them with a difficult task in the away leg on the 11th of July.

Yr ymwelwyr – sy’n 6ed yng nghynghrair eu gwlad ar hyn o bryd wedi 11 gêm o’r tymor - ddechreuodd orau ac fe reolwyd y meddiant ganddynt.E
r mawr siom i’r dorf swpus o 1500 - rhwydodd Jurgis Kalns wedi 16 munud.

Cafwyd ymateb cadarnhaol gan y Cymry. Fe hawliodd Lee Hunt ei fod wedi cael ei lorio yn y cwrt cosbi – ond ni bwyntiodd Mr Sven Bindels o Lwcsembwrg at y smotyn. 3 munud cyn yr egwyl ergydiodd Neil Gibson fodfeddi’n unig dros y trawst roddodd hyder pellach i’r cefnogwyr cartref.

Gwobrwywyd ffydd y ffyddloniaid yn amser yr amen ddiwedd yr hanner cyntaf wrth i Andy Parkinson greu hanes drwy rwydo o 10 llath – gôl gyntaf erioed Prestatyn yn Ewrop.

Cafwyd hwb pellach i’w gobeithion ddeng munud i mewn i’r ail hanner wrth i Roberts Savalnieks gael ei hel o’r cae am ei ail drosedd ddifrifol o’r noson.
Yn anffodus, Metalurgs ymatebodd orau i’r cerdyn coch ac wedi 62 o funudau rhoddodd ergyd gampus Šad?ins ail gôl oddi-cartref hynod werthfawr i’r Latfiaid.
Ymdrech wych gan Brestatyn ond mae ganddynt fynydd i’w ddringo ymhen wythnos yn Latfia os ydynt am barhau yn y gystadleuaeth.
