Cledan's free-kick gains Aber vital Win

Aberystwyth Town this afternoon earned a vital three points against relegation haunted Llanelli, thanks to Cledan Davies’ exquisite free kick nineteen minutes from time, and even though the game was no classic, the outlook for the Black and Greens looks rosier this evening.

On a pleasant sunny day at Park Avenue, the game started rather quietly. With Aber dominating possession chances did eventually come though: Jordan Follows’ snapshot was well saved by Craig Morris in the visitors’ goal, and Cledan Davies’ cross was nearly deflecting in by a Llanelli defender. Morris then denied Mark Jones, but eventually the pressure told on 33 minutes. Follows slid in Jones down the left flank, and his goalbound shot past the keeper was touched in by Chris Venables to widespread relief. Seven minutes later however the Reds were right back in it, when a free kick bounced back out to Craig Williams, and his superb right footed volley nestled into Mike Lewis’ top corner. Lewis and Sion James then denied Jeff White with vital deflections, and the half ended 1-1.

After the break the visitors enjoyed a spell of possession without really troubling the Black and Greens, though Aber too were finding it hard to turn their possession into good chances. Follows’ great shot from the edge of the area drew another great save from Morris, and Stuart Jones headed inches wide from a corner, and just when it was looking like it wasn’t going to be Aber’s day, Davies stepped up to loft a left footed free kick right into the top corner in front of the Dias Stand. The home side continued to press; Venables was inches wide from scoring at the end of the best move of the game, Jones was again denied, and Declan Caroll shot wide. Home supporters endured a nervy last five minutes, but Lewis punched a dangerous cross from Williams to safety, and Wyn Thomas headed clear against his own crossbar, to ensure a crucial three points which moves Aber up to ninth in the Welsh Premier League.
