Airbus keep Title Race Alive

Airbus made sure that The New Saints didn’t win the Corbett Sports WPL title without kicking a ball on Friday night as the Wingmakers beat Prestatyn 4-1 at the Hollingsworth Group Stadium.

Two left footed strikes by Wayne Riley and Michael Roddy within the opening 25 minutes set the home side well on their way to victory. The only other major talking point during the Airbus dominated opening period was Steve Abbott’s glaring miss from 2 yards on the half hour mark.

Any thoughts that Prestatyn might have harboured of a comeback were dashed after only two and a half minutes of the second half as Ryan Wade scored the first of his two goals of the evening.

Andy Parkinson’s 19th goal of the season gave the visitors some hope but his 20 yard free kick after 62 minutes proved to be the only real crumb of comfort for the Seasiders as they once again failed to register a Phase 2 victory.

Poor Prestatyn defending led to a simple tap in for Wade with 9 minutes left of play - his 8th of the season - and that completed another comfortable victory for Andy Preece's men against the Bastion Gardens outfit.

Prestatyn must be sick to the back teeth of Airbus this season as they have now been beaten by them four times. The Wingmakers have netted a total of 19 goals during the four encounters while conceding only twice.

This result means that The New Saints will have to beat Carmarthen Town on Saturday to secure the title once again. Airbus and the chasing pack will be hoping that the Old Gold will repeat their 3-0 victory at Park Hall back in November.
