Welsh Premier League and FIFA Assistant Referee Phil Thomas from Trealaw in the Rhondda has a big date coming up on Wednesday 29th May.

Thomas has been invited to participate in the English FA’s 150th Anniversary celebrations and the assistant from Wales will be on the line at Wembley for one of the matches.

The FA are playing three matches to celebrate this event, one of which will be the match between England and the Republic of Ireland at Wembley Stadium on the date in question.

Referees’ Manager Rodger Gifford was delighted to receive a personal e-mail from the Chairman of the FA Referees’ Committee, David Elleray, asking if Mr Thomas was available to take part in the game and it only took one phone call to ensure that Phil, or as he is known in Welsh Premier circles “Thomo” was available.

This is a tremendous appoint not only for Thomas, but also for the Welsh Premier League

"This is a tremendous appoint not only for Thomas, but also for the Welsh Premier League," said Gifford.

Last season, when the Gary Speed Memorial match was played in Cardiff, the Referee was World Cup Final Referee Howard Webb and Thomas was one of the assistants on duty on the night, along with Eddie King from Swansea and Gifford added;

"Howard Webb stated that he would have no problem working with Thomas and King every week in the FAPL, so word gets about and one of the Welsh Premier's most likeable and efficient performers both domestically and on the UEFA scene has been rewarded with such a prestigious appointment."
