Airbus deal for Maloney collapses

Airbus UK Broughton's deal for striker Ryan Maloney has collapsed after the US Soccer Federation confirmed that the player's last registration was as an amateur player.

The Wingmakers announced the signing of the ex-Bolton Wanderer on Tuesday under the impression that Maloney's last deal in the USA was as a contract player. The FAW contacted the US Soccer Federation for confirmation, but the response has meant that Maloney will not be able to sign until the window re-opens in pre-season.

We have had confirmation from the US Soccer Federation that unfortunately, this player was not registered as a professional (contract) player in America - he was only registered as an amateur with Jacksonville

"We have had confirmation from the US Soccer Federation that unfortunately, this player was not registered as a professional (contract) player in America - he was only registered as an amateur with Jacksonville;" said an FAW statement.

"Therefore, he will not be able to be sign for Airbus in the WPL as under FIFA rules, only players whose contract has expired prior to the end of a registration period may be registered outside of that registration period;" the notification concluded.

The 26-year-old Chester-born player spent the last five years playing in America's United Soccer Leagues, having started his career at Bolton Wanderers where he played in the Under-16s and reserves.

Maloney had been forced to return home after his American visa expired and had been training with the Wingmakers for the past three weeks.
