Ray Ellingham

Ray Ellingham

Thursday night’s Europa League Last 16 game between VFB Stuttgart and SC Napoli will have a Welsh presence as Ray Ellingham has been appointed by UEFA as Referee Observer

The Referee is Alexandru Dan Tudor of Romania and this match marks the start of a busy period for Ellingham, as when he returns on Friday morning into Cardiff, he will be changing his bags and setting off on Friday night to Cyprus. As the FAW National Fitness Coach for Welsh Premier Match Officials, he will be attending a joint FIFA/UEFA Referee Assistance Programme with the other National Fitness coaches looking at the latest innovations in refereeing physical welfare.

On the following Wednesday, Ray from Cardiff, will be joined by Referees’ Manager Rodger Gifford at the same venue where the next three days will be looking at and developing Referee Instructional Coaching skills.

Along with Rodger Gifford and Brian Lawlor, the other two Welsh UEFA Referee Observers, we are in a very fortunate position for such a small Natio

Head of Competitions Andrew Howard commented; "This is a great appointment for Ray and Welsh refereeing. In UEFA terms, he is still relatively new on the Panel of UEFA Referee Observers, so to be awarded a tie at this stage of the competition is testament to the reputation he has quickly developed.

"It's a great experience for Ray and it's excellent for the referees in Wales to know that in the coming weeks, he will be back on the Welsh circuit in the Welsh Premier League or in the Welsh League, assessing and coaching our match officials."

"Along with Rodger Gifford and Brian Lawlor, the other two Welsh UEFA Referee Observers, we are in a very fortunate position for such a small Nation;" concluded Howard.
