Bala take control of Play-Off Conference

Despite taking the lead Aberystwyth Town fell to defeat at home to Bala Town this evening, as the Lakesiders took control of the Welsh Premier League Play Off Conference with a deserved 3-1 win.

Aberystwyth’s Declan Carroll, who this week signed a contract to stay at the club until the end of 2013/4, started the game by stinging the palms of Ashley Morris in the Bala goal, but in truth the visitors began the stronger, with Lee Hunt and the impressive Ian Sheridan curling shots wide. Gavin Cadwallader was defending well for Town, and then against the run of play the Black and Greens took the lead when Mark Jones’ shot from the left side was bundled into his own net by Tony Davies on 26 minutes. The goal gave the home side confidence and Carroll nearly doubled the lead, after a lovely move in which Jordan Follows and Matty Collins combined well. Follows then had a near post shot saved by Morris, but then at the other end Kenny Lunt’s corner was punched by Aber goalie Mike Lewis as far as Tony Davies, who equalised his own own-goal with an overhead kick eight minutes before the break.

After the break Aber’s Matty Collins suffered a broken shoulder, and the high tempo game continued to engross without providing too many chances. Then just before the hour Ross Jefferies released Lee Hunt down the right hand channel, and he beat Mike Lewis to the ball and lobbed home expertly from the edge of the area. In a tense game, Lewis Codling shot over for the visitors, and Aber’s Stuart Jones had a header saved, before sub Kenny Brown completed the scoring on 72 minutes with a low shot which skidded under Lewis in Aber’s goal. From then on Bala were content to sit back and soak up the home side’s pressure. Carroll shot just over, and then showed some wonderful trickery before having another shot saved, but in the end the visitors walked off the field deserved winners after a professional away performance.
