Two Top-Flight clashes in Welsh Cup

FAW Welsh Cup Round 5 Draw

There will be two top-flight clashes in the Quarter-Final of the FAW Welsh Cup.

Nev Powell’s Bangor City will enjoy home advantage against either Airbus UK Broughton or Newtown and the Citizens will find out which when that Round 4 match is played on Tuesday 5th February.

Carmarthen Town, winners at home against Bala Town on Saturday, face top-flight opponents once again at Richmond Park. They will host Neil Gibson’s Prestatyn in the last eight.

Current holders TNS will be rewarded with a journey to Haverfordwest County if they can overcome Rhyl FC in their re-arranged Round 4 clash. The Bluebirds have finally been drawn at home after four away ties to reach the Quarter-Final. Should the Lilywhites shock the Saints at Park Hall on 5th February, then it will see Greg Strong’s Huws Gray Alliance high-flyers face the Welsh League’s promotion hopefuls.

There will certainly be at least one non-Welsh Premier League outfit in the semi-final though, as Gavin Chesterfield’s Barry Town will face the winner of the final outstanding Round 4 match, which will be played between Caerau Ely and Flint Town Utd this Saturday.

The draw was made at the FAW HQ on Monday by former Wales strikers John Hartson and Nathan Blake. Hartson is a familiar face to Welsh Premier League fans as a regular pundit on Sgorio, whilst ex-Cardiff City star Nathan Blake won the Welsh Cup with the Bluebirds twice in the 1990’s. The forward from Newport was part of the City team that beat Hednesford 1-0 in the 1991/92 season and he was also part of the Bluebirds team that beat Rhyl 5-0 the following season, both matches were played at the Arms Park in Cardiff.
