It is a busy time for Wales' top ranked UEFA Referee Lee Evans from Llanllechid.
Last Wednesday he took charge of the friendly A International between Israel and Belarus in Tel Aviv which was arranged through Referee Manager Rodger Gifford’s working relationship with UEFA Referees’ Officer Hugh Dallas who is acting as a consultant to the Israeli FA on refereeing matters. In return Israeli officials will be coming to Wales for the game with Austria in February.
Accompanying Lee on the trip were Assistant Referees Eddie King and Phil Thomas with Huw Jones as 4th Official. In fact Huw did a double duty on the day as in the afternoon he refereed Israel v Belarus Under 21’s.
This coming week sees Lee making an even longer journey when he travels to Baku, Capital City of Azerbaijan to take charge of the UEFA Europa League Match Day 5 encounter between Neftci and Red Star Belgrade from Serbia.
It is a must win game for both teams so it will be a demanding affair. Lee will be leading a team of 6 Welsh officials on the trip, Assistant Referees Eddie King and Phil Thomas, 4th Official Alun Boore and Additional Assistant Referees Mark Whitby and Bryn Markham-Jones.
Referees Manager Rodger Gifford referred to the appointments as; "Great news for Welsh refereeing and a clear incentive for those wishing to take up the whistle.
"The opportunities are there and through the Area FA Development Groups we have set up throughout the Principality we have established a pathway for the younger dedicated match officials giving them the opportunity to officiate at a high level which can only be good for Welsh Football in the future".
