The Principality Building Society Welsh Premier Football League

Competitive?...It's In Our Nature.

Wales' largest building society, which has assets of over £4.3 billion, netted a three year sponsorship deal to become the Welsh Premier Football League's title sponsor for three seasons, commencing from the 2006/07 season. The deal kicked off on 28th July 2006, enabling the Principality Building Society, which was formed in 1860 and has 51 branches across Wales and the borders, to support the development of the Principality Building Society Welsh Premier Football League and the clubs who compete within it.

John Deakin, Welsh Premier League Secretary, is pleased with the mutual association, saying, "We are delighted that the sponsorship of the Premier League has been taken up by an established and respected Welsh business. It was important to us to seek sponsorship from within Wales if possible and Principality has enabled us to do that - a bonus for Welsh football."

"We are thrilled to play a significant role in a sport which, like us, is at the heart of many Welsh communities," said Peter Griffiths, Principality Building Society chief executive. "Football is up there as our 'other' national sport and its popularity is on the increase across the nation. Principality is well-represented across Wales with a significant number of branches in North and Mid Wales where many of the Premier League teams are based."

He added: "The increasing profile of teams like TNS, Rhyl, Llanelli and Carmarthen Town shows that the Welsh Premier League is nurturing incredible football talent."

The news comes as Principality enters its second year of sponsorship for the WRU's Principality Building Society Premiership and of the Olympic swimmer, David Davies. These sponsorship deals show Principality's commitment to sport in Wales at all levels.

"Our sponsorship of both the Welsh Football Premier League, which is predominantly in north and mid Wales, and the rugby Premiership, concentrated in South Wales, allows us to build a strong presence throughout the whole of Wales. We aim to be associated in people's mind with the best of Welsh sport," added Dominic White, head of marketing at Principality.

This announcement came as a further boost to the Welsh Premier League as it was annunced the day after the victory of Llanelli in the first Qualifying Round of the UEFA Cup, defeating Swedish fist Division side, Gefle IF.

The Principality Building Society Welsh Football Premier League kicked off on Friday 18th August 2006 when the champions, TNS defeated Airbus UK 1-0 and last year's runners-up Llanelli travelled to Aberystwyth Town and gained a 1-1 draw.
